 | This TV series has a unique atmosphere to it. The original (for an anime) visual style, the fitting and at times deeply touching music, an attempt to build a realistic fantasy world with real human feelings and sins living in it - all of that made The Twelve Kingdoms one of my favourites. The main story was told and there's not much one could add to it, but the fact the Taiki arc was left unfinished is a shame. It is the second most important arc in the anime, it's got the story potential and compelling characters, yet it stops right in mid-flight.
Finishing the Taiki (Black Kirin) arc would:
a) create a sense of plot completion, and thus give satisfaction to the audience. Finished stories are perceived as better ones, so this would also make the FRANCHISE more likable and earn it CRITICAL ACCLAIM, strengthening its position in the market.
b) Youka would be given a chance to show her calmed, changed self as she helps Taiki get back to his world (this is something that's impossible in the novels, as Youko's friends' characters don't exist there)
c) Youko, the main character, would get a chance to act as the real, de-facto empress, meeting other royalty as equal and helping a neighbouring country as head of her own state. This could be an ideal polishing to her personality development throughout the original TV series.
Overall, it is a much needed addition to the series, and could probably be done with 26 or even 13 episodes of a sequel. |
